Renault Captur vs Jeep Renegade
Apr 10, 2014 - 3:08 PM - by maxine
Looks as if Captur will shortly see a new mate in the sandbox, this one goes by the name of Jeep Renegade. The diminutive Jeep was birthed on the back of the FIAT 500L much like the Capturs relation to the Clio. See then the Americans went a stuck a bunch of bits on for fording puddles and assaulting curbs. Considering the segment is dominated currently by mostly soft-roaders the Jeep with its promise of sand bashing pleasure may just have a leg up. Regardless shall we see how the two will get along?

Lets start with the motivation. Both the Captur and Renegade are available with a selection of diesel and petrol power plants.

Captur

Petrol

TCe 900cc Stop/Start Inline Three Cylinder: 90 hp@ 5250 RPM/100 lb-ft @ 2000 RPM

TCe 1.2L Inline Four Cylinder: 116 hp @ 4000 RPM/162 lb-ft @ 1750 RPM

Diesel

dCi 90 1.5L Turbo Stop/Start Inline Four Cylinder: 90 hp @ 4000 rpm/162 lb-ft @ 1750 RPM

All Captur Engine Choices are available with a DCT or Manual Gearbox

Renegade

Petrol

1.6L Tritec Inline Four Cylinder: 108 hp @ 5,500 RPM/ 112 ft-lbs @ 4500 RPM

1.4L MultiAir Inline Four Cylinder: 138 hp@ 5000 RPM/170 ft-lbs @ 1750 RPM

1.4L MultiAir Turbo Inline Four Cylinder: 168 hp @ 5,500 RPM/184 ft-lbs @ 2,500 RPM

2.4L Tigershark Inline Four Cylinder: 184 hp @ 6400 RPM/177 @ 4400 RPM

Diesel

1.6L MultiJet II Inline Four TurboDeisel: 118 hp @ 4000 RPM/236 ft-lbs @ 1750 RPM

2.0L MultiJet II Inline Four TurboDiesel: 138 hp @ 3750 RPM/258 lb-ft @ 1500 RPM

The Renegade will offer shoppers a choice of 5 (1.6 Tritec) or 6 speed manual (1.4 Petrol, 1.4T, 1.6 Diesel, 2.0 Diesel) gearboxes, a 9 speed ZF automatic (1.4 Turbo, 2.0 Diesel, 2.4 Petrol)

Dimensions

Next lets look at how the two will stack up dimensionally....

Exterior

Captur:

Wheelbase: 2606 mm
Length: 4122 mm
Width: 1770 mm
Height: 1566.1 mm

Renegade:

Wheelbase: 2570.48 mm
Length: 4231.64 mm
Width: 1803.4 mm
Height: 1689.1 mm

While I know this is not the full breadth of comparison for these two vehicles they offer such similar offers that ultimately it will come down to one of two factors. Price and Prowess. Captur is attractively priced in segment with a base price of Ł14,495, so Renegade will need to either match that or offer a ton of included kit. The second factor is prowess, Captur is not offered with an AWD system what so ever, Jeep brings legendary capability. The single question remaining is will that matter to European shoppers?

Crowded Super Minis
Feb 14, 2014 - 2:29 PM - by maxine
The Super Mini is an exploding segment across Europe currently. Renault has recently booked 100,000 units sold of the Captur in less than one year on the market. Opel and Peugeot have not taken the segment lying down either. Both offer competitive options with the Opel Mokka and the Peugeot 2008. Not to mention the uber present Ford EcoSport and Nissan Juke.

The segment is about to be even more crowded as several new entrants are in development or on the docket for development.

Hyundai is working on their own weapon for the segment called the ix25. The ix25 is expected to debut this April at the Beijing Motor Show. The ix25 sports a boxier appearance than the Captur with the aim of maximizing usable cargo capacity. The ix25 should be one of, if not THE class leader in available cargo capacity. Hyundai has a habit of stretching its vehicles ever so slightly simply to offer best in class cargo. Expect the ix25 to wear Hyundais new design language debuted on the 2015 Genesis. It will share its platform with the i20 hatchback much like the Captur shares with the Clio.

Suzuki is also looking to bust into the segment, they have a prototype currently running around Sweden. The Suzuki concept is believed to be a production version of the iv-4 concept. Production is not slated until 2015.

Lastly is Mercedes, who may possibly be considering to probably with all likely hood produce their X-class based on the Captur. At least thats the story their rolling with right now.

Quote:
“There is the question of what happens below [the GLA],” Mercedes head of research and development, Thomas Weber, told us. “We are watching it closely, but there are other gaps in the range that are more interesting.”

Just like that, the segment is filling up fast!
